It's really annoying since it'll go down for a while, then it'll start to go back up because the other button's in the way. And it could cause people with OCD to have a nervous breakdown.
For example, when on the List pane, have the insert key focus on the edit box to enter a new task.
When navigating the list, use 's' to select the task for today.
